March of 2015, Typhoon Maysak swept through Chuuk State and damaged homes, food crops and contaminated water supplies.  Chuuk Women’s Council (CWC) also experienced significant damage after half its roof was blown off and water catchments were damaged.  CWC offers several programs throughout the year including workshops, training and summer school for community children.  Thus, it is vital that CWC staff, volunteers, visitors and program participants have clean water to drink while at CWC.  However, post-typhoon it became increasingly difficult to provide drinking water at CWC due to the cost of purchasing water.

Many donor partners responded by offering assistance through grants and projects.  One such donor was the Rotary Club of Sendai (Rotary International District 2520) and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Rotary Club of Pohnpei who assisted CWC with the grant application for the “The Rainbownesia Water and Sanitation Project”.  The project includes the two new tanks, two water pumps, and a water filtration system to purify water.  Preparation for the project commenced in August 2016 and was completed September 2017.

On Monday, October 9, 2017, representatives from CWC and Sendai Rotary held a project completion celebration.  Representatives from the Rotary Club of Tokyo including Den-en Chofu Midori, Tokyo Shirokane, Tokyo Haneda, Hachinohe South and Kamakura attended the celebration.

The celebration included the blessing of the new tanks by Rev. Steioshy Manuel.  CWC President, Kiki Stinnett thanked the Rotary Club for their generosity and support.  She indicated that all those who use Shinobu M. Poll Memorial Center will greatly benefit from the project, and the facility will be open to the community during natural disasters.  Finally, she acknowledged that this collaboration has strengthened the relationship between the organizations and true friendships have been formed.

Masayuki Tochikubo, Sendai Rotary Club President represented the visiting Rotary contingent expressed that the Rotary Clubs of Japan are very happy to see this project come to fruition.  Furthermore, they appreciate efforts of CWC and willingness of CWC to work together in strengthening the KIZUNA between Chuuk, FSM and Japan.

The event ended with a delicious lobster dinner hosted by CWC and Truk Stop Hotel.
